My
mother's family came from Switzerland. She still has some of the clocks
from their old house in the Engadine. Recently I took the "kitchen
clock" apart to try to get it to run. The mechanisms were wonderfully
thought out. I felt as though I was in communication through time with
the original maker. It seemed that the best parts of clocks were hidden
inside. I was inspired to make a kinetic clock sculpture that would cover
a two story wall with gears and weights and bells and chimes. This clock
is a prototype for that currently unfulfilled dream/project. It employs
a verge and foliot escapement and records only minutes. The scape wheel
is handmade. The other gears were modified from junked car parts. Its
slow majestic movement fascinates viewers. Form and motion were the primary
concerns of this piece. Future variations are planned.
